Web3 for Social Impact with Public Goods Club

Last week we talked with Trav, the founder of Public Goods Club, to learn all about their initiative to fund public goods projects. In the process, we learned a lot about how to use crypto for good, and ways to get people interested and onboarded into web3.

Let’s recap all the awesome info we learned!

Public goods are for everyone

Public goods are things that are free for anyone who wants or needs access to them. It encompasses everything from art and libraries to free software and much more.

Public Goods Club is built on the idea that we can make the world a better place when we have access to information, resources, and inspiration. By coming together as a community, Public Goods Club provides a space for people to share new ideas and help fund them.

How does Public Goods Club work?

Trav explained that people can buy a membership token to become a member, which will allow you to vote in the Do Good Challenge.

The Do Good Challenge is open to anyone. You just have to connect your wallet, and then you can submit your public goods project idea. Entries close September 27th, and the top 5 projects will get 0.5 ETH each.

Aside from that, people can be a contributor just by supporting their Twitter account, reposting their content, making memes, and telling a friend.

Benefits of using crypto for social impact

Crypto brings a higher level of transparency, because people can easily see where funds are going. There’s also a level of community that’s involved with the type of funding that blockchain technology allows for. This can be especially motivating for social impact projects, because people want to see the tangible impact of their efforts towards causes they care about.

The decentralized nature of crypto also allows populations without access to traditional banking to participate, broadening the potential reach of social impact projects.

Community engagement and onboarding people to web3

Public Goods Club is built on Base, because Coinbase is widely known even outside of the crypto sphere. Trav explains that this can help ease the mind of people who are new to crypto, alongside the good UX of Base as a chain.

As the founder, Trav says that, “When I really believe in something, I have to actively participate in building and creating it.” This shines through in the way he’s engaged with his community throughout the process of creating Public Goods Club.

He pointed out the importance of thinking from the consumer perspective. It’s easy to get caught up in the technicalities and assume that others have the same level of knowledge about your project, but it’s important to step back and simplify concepts.

Try to incorporate easy-to-digest content into your strategy, such as funny memes. Not only does this grab attention, but it also helps people get familiar with your brand.

Trav also recommends analyzing which posts do well and using that to guide your strategy around what to do more of. It’s important to know your audience and listen to what they want.

What’s the future of Public Goods Club?

After the Do Good Challenge is over, Trav plans on producing media to spread awareness about social impact projects. He also wants to expand into becoming a lifestyle brand with apparel and other merch like posters and stickers. Having physical merch can unite the community even further.

Be sure to follow Public Goods Club and check out their website to get your membership token.
